first_imgABBOTT IS TO cut 180 jobs from its plant in Sligo in an unexpected move announced this evening.Abbott, which is one of Sligo’s largest employers, is to cut more than half of the workforce at Ballytivnan plant over the next twelve months. It will be seeking voluntary redundancies from staff.Union officials said that that workers had not known that jobs were to be cut and that the losses will have a devastating effect on the county.“There was no expectation among our members that such an announcement was imminent and indeed, the sheer number of proposed job losses has shocked the workers who have given loyal and dedicated service to Abbott over many years,” said Frank Jones of SIPTU.Abbott employs almost 4,000 people across Ireland.
