PAOK Ties, Asteras, Panathinaikos Lose

first_imgThessaloniki’s soccer team PAOK kept its hopes for qualification to the last 32 of the Europa League alive by getting a 1-1 draw at Italy, Fiorentina, but Asteras Tripolis lost to Tottenham and Panathinaikos went down to Eindhoven in homes games for the Greek teams.PAOK got its fourth point in four games but had a strong second half performance that almost earned it a win in Florence and a  better result.PAOK had to withstand a Fiorentina attack in the first half and was bolstered by goalie Panayiotis Glykos, who shut the door on the Italian team.In the second half, a goal by PAOK’s Stefanos Athanasiadis was waved off for an offsides penalty but in the 81st minute Athanasiadis shot a pass to Maarten Martens, who fired it in from six yards away.Fiorentia counterattacked ferociously though and managed to score the evener with only two minutes remaining in regulation time on a Manuel Pasqual free-kick.Tottenham defeated Asteras for the second time in two weeks, this time in Tripoli  by 2-1 on goals from Andros Townsend on a penalty kick, and Harry Kane.After half time, Asteras came out fired up and scored in the last minute on a goal from Jeronimo Barrales after Federico Fazio got sent off.Asteras is still in the running for a place in the last 32 of the tournament having four points from as many games.in Athens, the Dutch side PSV Eindhoven came back twice from Panathinaikos goals to upend the disappointed Greens, s-1, forcing the Greek team out of the tourney.Panathinaikos’s English goalkeeper Luke Steele couldn’t withstand the Dutch onslaught and his team’s defensive lapses. Eindhoven got goals from Memphis Depay, Luuk De Jong and Georginio Wijnaldum while the losers got a score from Mladen Petric.TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img
