Cruise to Run founder Jerry Freiser was very interested in conducting such an activity on the island since he believed that the experience would be different from any which they have done in the past. It was decided that a forest run and possibly the new Waitukubuli National Trail (WNT) would be the best option after reading so much about it online and through the press. The Waitukubuli National Trail Project Officers and Marketing Executives of the Discover Dominica Authority first welcomed the group in 2011 while they were on their test visits to each island on which they would hold activities. After a day out visiting various trail options, Segment 10 (Colihaut to Syndicate) of the WNT was selected for this activity. The passengers will arrive via the Caribbean Princess Cruise ship on January 26, 2012 and depart to the heights of Colihaut where they will begin their run. It is expected that a total of 284 participants will be disembarking the cruise ship on this day. The group leaders have expressed great excitement about the day’s adventure and are looking forward to an excellent experience. The Colihaut Village Council have been every active in the preparation of this event as they have realized that this is an exciting and rewarding activity for the community. They have organized for their local vendors to provide the roast plantain, fruits and cane which the community is known for. They have assisted in the resurfacing of the access road to the trail and the clearing of the trail for the event. The activity is anticipated to last 2 hours with the group being mainly runners with a few walkers. The group will be driven to the heights of Colihaut where they will begin the run to Syndicate. Accompanying the group will be villagers from Colihaut and the cadet corps. A press conference will be held at the end of the run at the Syndicate Reception building where the “Cruise to Run” leaders will make a presentation to the Colihaut Community in the form of a Give Back program to donate sporting equipment to groups in the community. Colin Piper. Mr Colin Piper, CEO/Director of Tourism of the Discover Dominica Authority commented that “this activity will open the possibilities for the Waitukubuli National Trail and expand the offerings of the destination to potential visitors. This event is also an added benefit since the village of Colihaut will benefit from this activity and future activities since segment 10 of the WNT is the only one thus far identified suitable for non competitive running. From this activity we would like to encourage the participants to continue to inform and educate about the island and to bring along their friends next year as we hope to make this an annual activity.” The DDA is pleased to continue to market the Waitukubuli National Trail and hope that local tour operators can now put packages together to include the Waitukubuli National Trail ensuring that we continue to improve and develop new activities and interests to keep the potential visitor captivated.Cruise to Run is dubbed the Ultimate Runners Vacation which allows persons to set sail on a seven-day cruise from San Juan, Puerto Rico and visit St. Thomas, Tortola, Antigua, Dominica and Barbados. It is meant for everyone to enjoy, from the recreational to serious runner with runs in a variety of distances and terrains. The Discover Dominica Authority continues to work towards increasing the numbers of visitors calling to our shores – one of its two mandates- and the Authority is always eager to work with groups such as these in an effort to augment Dominica’s tourism product offering. With the increase of visitors it is expected that visitor expenditure will also increase through services rendered and taxes paid. For more information on Dominica, contact Discover Dominica Authority at 767 448 2045.
